Maintenance Of Refrigerators |
| Major cause of breakdowns in refrigerators. |
|
The most common problem which causes a refrigerator to stop cooling properly is a dirty condensor coil. Once a year you should clean this coil (located either behind the unit hanging on the back of the cabinet,or under the cabinet on the bottom).
Clean the coil using a special refrigerator coil brush.(you can buy this at any appliance store). Turn the thermostat to the off position
then remove the kickplate from the bottom of the fridge. If the coil is hanging on the back, skip this step. Pull the fridge away from the wall and unplug it from the wall outlet. Remove the cardboard cover on the back of the fridge. Be careful not to damage it as this controls the airflow over the coil underneath.
Check to see if the fan blade underneath the fridge is moving free. Carefully wipe the blades off with a damp rag (do not bend the blades).
Then carefully from the front of the fridge,
clean the coils with the brush by pushing it between the rows of coils and pulling it back out. Do th
5s across the entire coil pulling the dust ,dirt and lint out of it.
After cleaning the coil, check the fan blades you wiped off and make sure nothing is keeping them from turning. Put the cover back on carefully and plug the cord into the wall outlet.
Carefully push the fridge back into place, install the kick plate and clean the mess on the floor before you turn it back on using the thermostat.
During the years that I was servicing refrigerators most of the repairs that were caused by dirt, excessive heat caused by dirt or
by small objects getting sucked into the fan blades stopping the condensor cooling fan motor.
That is why it is important to keep the coils clean. Do this simple maintenance and you will not only lower your electric bill, but your refrigerator will have a very long life.

There are a lot of sharp edges in the coil compartment be very careful not to cut yourself,
do not forget to unplug the cord, and do not forget to turn the fridge back on by the thermostat or you will lose your food.
