We all know how it is… there is a stain on the couch and no one knows how it got there or what it is. You have tried scrubbing it to death, but are unable to get it to go away. Now you are thinking that you have to throw it out and start from scratch. Before you go that far, consider these few hints to help you increase the longevity of your upholstered furniture.
The first thing that needs to be addressed is the fabric that the furniture is made of. If your house is as busy as mine, then you will want to make sure that when you purchase new sofas and chairs that the fabric works for you. In other words, don’t rush right out an purchase that wool blend because it is the perfect color and price… instead, consider fabrics that are more family and pet friendly. For example, micro soft fiber is probably the best furniture because it takes very little effort to clean. It wipes clean with just a damp rag and takes the abuse of small children. The other option you have if you must get that not so family friendly fabric is purchasing sofa and chair covers. In the long run, this will allow you to spare the upholstered furniture and you can wash the covers when they get dirty.
Another way to increase the longevity of your upholstered furniture is what we will call weekly maintenance. By this I mean making sure if something gets spilled that it is cleaned up right away. I also mean making sure to vacuum the furniture fabric at least once a week to avoid any of the dirt to get ground into the fabric. It is also important to make sure that you turn you cushions on a regular basis. Yes, I said turn over your cushions. This will
help to decrease the amount of wear and tear to just one side of the couch cushions and will increase the live of your couch.
Another thing to consider is making sure that your upholstered furniture is well protected with a fabric protector. This is generally offered by the furniture stores when you make your initial purchase. It is a highly recommended procedure if you have kids or pets as this will in the long run protect your new furniture from most stains. This will help in preventing any spills from becoming a stain. And, if you can’t get any stains out, the manufacturer will either fix or replace the furniture. Don’t panic if you already have that furniture and you did not pay for this extra. There are plenty of professional services out there that offer protective treatments that will help you with the current furniture set that you own.
There are a few things to keep in mind: Making sure to purchase the right fabric and doing daily cleaning is important to increase the life of your furniture. Should a spill occur, make sure to get it cleaned up right away. If you are not sure the type of fabric that your sofa is made of, then it would be beneficial to contact a professional to get out any stains so that you don’t ruin your sofa and have to start all over again. No matter what, if you take care of your furniture by following the simple day to day cleaning, then it should last you a lifetime.
