Learn how to select and buy fresh flowers for your arrangements.

Before you buy fresh flowers, pay particular attention to how the flowers are maintained. Are the flowers in clean buckets and out of the way of sunlight? Is the water clear and odorless? Are the buds full of color and vigor?

Soft or limp buds are a clear indication that the flowers are old and will have a short vase life. The foliage on these stems will tend to look burnt or yellowed. Your flowers should be colorful and vibrant with some remaining buds in color. Roses should be firm and not spongy. Choosing flowers that are firm, and that have buds will ensure a longer vase life. You can buy blooms that are fully open. They are spectacular but short lived.
