At some point or another, almost every woman is going to wonder if she is pregnant. Some women may have been trying to conceive and others may not have been, but either way, it’s impossible not to be curious about whether or not you are experiencing pregnancy symptoms and to look for physical signs that you may be pregnant. Here’s a list of most of the possible signs and symptoms of pregnancy and when to look for them:
Sign #1
Your period is late: For most women, the missed period is the first and most obvious sign of pregnancy. This is one of the most reliable physical symptoms of pregnancy, but still it is not failsafe, because some women have irregular cycles, and some women will experience light bleeding during pregnancy that may be mistaken for a period. Sign #2
You get morning sickness: This nausea, dizziness, light-headedness, and vomiting can be experienced at any time of day, not just in the morning. Most women, especially if this is your first pregnancy, will not experience morning sickness until after the sixth week of pregnancy, or two weeks after your missed period. There are, however, some women that experience morning sickness very early on in their pregnancy.
Sign #3
Your breasts are tender and achy: This is another symptom that is not usually experienced in very early pregnancy. Most women start experiencing tenderness in their breasts after the eighth week of pregnancy. Some women experience this as heightened sensitivity and others as acute pain. Keep in mind that some tenderness in the breasts is also a common premenstrual symptom.
Sign #4
You’re tired: Feeling more exhausted than usual? This is a common pregnancy symptom felt by many women in the first trimester, even very early on in the pregnancy. This extreme fatigue is caused by fluctuating hormone levels, and may be a sign that you are pregnant.
Sign #5
You’re getting headaches: While headaches are a common symptom of pregnancy, this is not a very reliable predictor of pregnancy, since headaches can be caused by many other factors like not getting enough sleep, not eating right, or being under a lot of stress.
Sign #6
You have a sensitivity to smells: Many pregnant women experience a heightened sense of smell during pregnancy. If all of the sudden the slight scent of onions sends you reeling, or if you can suddenly smell bread baking in the bakery six blocks away, this may be a sign that you are indeed pregnant.
Sign #7
You notice a little bloating: Bloating and water retention is a common pregnancy symptom, but it is also a common premenstrual symptom, so it can be an unreliable sign of pregnancy.
Sign #8
Your vaginal discharge increases: Throughout pregnancy, women can experience a lot of clear, odorless vaginal discharge. You may notice this symptom even in early pregnancy.
Sign #9
Frequent trips to the bathroom: The frequent need to urinate is experienced by many women even very early in pregnancy as the expanding uterus puts more pressure on the bladder.
Whether you have many signs of pregnancy or just one, you are probably going to want to take a pregnancy tests. Home tests can usually be performed accurately on the day of your missed period. If you get a negative result and still don’t get your period for four days, you should take another test. Home tests detect pregnancy hormones in the urine, and will sometimes produce a false negative if taken too early. Blood tests are available at a doctor’s office, and will have accurate results up to a week before your period is due.
