How To Make Exercise Fun

How to take the pain and drudgery out of exercise.

What? Exercise and fun in the same sentence? Surely some mistake?

Why does it seem that the words “exercise” and “boring” are synonymous?

Visions of waking up at five in the morning and going for a sleepy jog, facing that same perky person on the DVD player, or forcing yourself to the gym to work out with weights--it's enough to make you turn back over and go back to sleep! And who can blame you?

Why can't exercising be fun? Well, with a little creativity, it can be just that!

We all seem to have been brainwashed into the belief that exercise has to be painful if it's to do us any good.

In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. As all recent studies have found, all it takes to get some basic benefits from exercising is to move around a bit more - be a bit more physical ... just a bit!

So here are some starting points:

Play with your family each week, including outdoor games like badminton, walking, biking, or chasing the dog in the backyard;

Be intentional about walking near a place you love. If you're a gardener, walk around an arboretum. If you're into airoplanes, walk around the airport car park. You'll find something to keep your mind off the fact that it's hot and your legs are tired;

Try gardening! If you have a small plot of ground you can transform into a thing of beauty, you could find yourself hooked on this hobby! Digging, lifting, and planting hardly seem like work when you reap a beautiful harvest;

Find someone to exercise with once
or twice a week (or more). Enjoy your time together - walk or just use some exercise equipment together. The time will fly by, and you'll strengthen a friendship;

Get a mini-trampoline. If you've got room, go for a larger outdoor one. Trampolines are fun for children and adults alike! And you burn off more calories than you think bouncing around

Reward yourself after you've exercised. Take an extra long bath, watch a movie, or read a book you've been wanting to dive in to

Try bowling or another active sport once a week. Play football with your kids. You’ll enjoy the exercise and spending time with your kids is the number one way to build a good relationship with them.

The more fun you attach to exercise, the easier it is to keep at it consistently. And if you set up a very loose plan for doing a few exercises several times a week, it doesn't get overwhelming. So get up and get moving for your health.

You’ll have fun, you’ll be healthier, and you won’t regret the time you spend doing it.

And don't forget ... the more you do it, the more you'll want to do it ... and the easier it will get.
