How To Keep Your Simple Freshwater Fish Alive

How to Keep Your Simple Freshwater Fish Alive

Ok. For all of you that have fish, but are wondering why they always die, here is some advice that probably improve your fishy's chance of living a nice long happy life in his/her bowl/tank....

1) First of all, unlike those crazy Japanese in Tokyo, most fish don't like to be cramped in a small space - BUY AS LARGE OF A BOWL/TANK AS POSSIBLE. Realistically, if you are going to keep fish, you really should get a tank (10 gals minimum).

2) Following the above, MAKE SURE YOU DON'T OVERSTOCK YOUR TANK. Generally, the rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon of water... but this really depends on the type of fish you are keeping....little skinny Neons easily fit into this rule while dirty "fat" goldfish actually need about 5-10 gallons per inch of fish....overall, it is best to understock the tank and let the fish grow in to the tank, rather than shove a bunch of fish in the tank and watch some natural steel-cage-match process of elimination take place....

3) Now that you have a couple of fish in your tank (and you have taken the basic steps necessary to prepare the tank for your aquatic friends - which will be discussed in
another article) you are probably thinking that they are super hungry and need a bite or two...well you might be correct, but DON'T OVER FEED YOUR FISH. Yes, I know how hungry you might be after coming home from a hard day's work and it is very easy to think that your fish share the same feelings... but unfortunately food pollutes the tank and too much of it becomes toxic... try to feed your fish just a bit of food SEVERAL times a day... but never too much... don't worry about underfeeding your fish - you probably are feeding them just enough if you "underfeed" them what one normally feeds their fish... (specific amounts will be discussed in another article).

4) Ok. Here is the key to maintaining a fish tank... CHANGE 25% OF THE WATER AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK... now this really can vary, but believe me, your fish will appreciate a shot of clean water (and the removal of some dirty water) every once and a while - actually every week....or more if you have to feed your fish a lot....

Alright. There is my quick fish keeping review....Please refer to my future articles about many of the specifics of fish keeping...

Take care and happy fishing (fish keeping)...
