The Alaskan Malamute - Facts

The Alaskan Malamute is calm, playful, enjoying the outdoors a lot. They behave very well in the company of children, if they were raised next to them from the puppy stage. They can interact with strangers if they are properly socialized in earlier stages.

Origins

The Alaskan Malamute originates in the parts of Alaska, from an alaskan tribe called Mahlemuit. This breed was mainly used as a sled dog and as a hunting dog and it has appearance similarities with the siberian husky. It was considered to be the eldest member, the "First Dog".

Appearance and Grooming

The Alaskan Malamute is large in size, weighting about 38 kg and about 60 cm in height. But these numbers might differ when comparing the males with the females. They display a solid bone structure, a white face mask and their coat is thick, dense, harsh and ranges in color from dark brown to honey brown. Having blue eyes is a sign that they aren't 100% pure breed. They have powerful necks and their pulling force is enormous, at the same ratio with their bodies. They shed heavily, but it's rather seasonal. Their body ends in a plushy tail.

Health and Lifestyle

This breed isn't used to warm climates, since they are from the Alaska cold area
15. They love the cold weather and need constant walks and exercising. They can be affected by eye problems (retinal atropy, cataracts), ligament problems, immune system deficit, bleeding disorders.

Temperament

The Alaskan Malamute is calm, playful, enjoying the outdoors a lot. They behave very well in the company of children, if they were raised next to them from the puppy stage. They can interact with strangers if they are properly socialized in earlier stages. Pay extra precaution and put a secured fence around your garden and yard so the dog won't escape and cause havoc. They can get possessive with their food and feeding should be done separately.
